Pinterest Challenge: Feather Pillow Edition

Last week Sherry from Young House Love announced she and three other lovely bloggers were going to be organizing a Pinterest challenge. As I've mentioned before, I'm a huge Pinterest fan, and I've also been lacking in the project idea department (and spare time department, but that's another story). I thought the challenge would be great motivation to work on something new.

The first step (and the most difficult) was to choose something I've pinned in the past that would make a fun project to put my own stamp on. Here is the pin I went with:

I looooove that plant frond pillow. It originally came from a blog post on Cottage and Vine. I thought I'd try and make something similar, but maybe give it more of a feathery spin. A feather pillow!

It just so happens I have a ridiculously large box of fabric I've been hanging onto for just such an occasion, and I lucked out and had a little bottle of white fabric paint left over from another project too. Perfect!

It's times like these I wish I had a screen printing kit, it took a while to paint. My hands are rusty.

I didn't really take many pictures along the way, because a) it's just a rectangular pillow, and b) my sewing abilities are atrocious. Let's just focus on the end product:

I was going to go back over all the strokes and try and get them super clean and thick, but after sleeping on it (ha, not actually) I'm okay with how it looks. All in all it was a a really fun project, and it felt good to get motivated. I still have a few runner-up pins that I might take a stab at re-creating, hopefully I don't wait until the next challenge to do it!

Be sure to check out Sherry's, Katie's, Emily's and Lana's projects. Thanks for organizing the challenge, ladies! Can't wait to see what everyone else came up with!

  1. I absolutely love this! (Even more than the original.) The red color and feathered (ha, no pun intended) look of the hand painted design is perfect. Now if only I could sew...

Thanks for the love on my challenge post, if you decide to make one for your porch, be sure to send me pics. I would love to see how it turns out!

  2. That's so cool! I don't know if I would have a steady enough hand to draw like that on a pillow!

  6. Your photo was the first one I clicked on when going through the younghouselove projects. How cool to see that you stopped by! The pillow you made is gorgeous. I made one from another blog post recently that used screen paint (from Hobby Lobby) and I'm really happy with how it turned out. Need to post it! Great job on that red color and painting of the feather!

  9. Just saw this. Oh, I love that pillow. And the idea of doing it as a 'feather pillow' rather than the frond: Brilliant. I think I want to make me one. I shall definitely add it to my list. Thanks. Brilliant. Really.

  12. @Nancy: You should totally make one! It wasn't that difficult, just took me a bit of time to get my painter's hands warmed up again.

Q: If I ever decide to make more and put them on Etsy, I'll give you a good deal. :)

    Emily: Thank you!!
