The Veggie Venture: Day 1

Alrighty, it's time for a new gardening project. I'm going to call this one The Veggie Venture, 2010 Edition. Let's put that patio to work!

I thought I'd pick out some things the pup could eat (carrots, taters, broccoli) and some other things that would realistically be easy to grow on my not SUPER sunny balcony (lettuce, peas, beans). Typically root veggies need lots of sun to give a good return, but I thought I'd try some of them anyway. For fun AND torture.

Since I don't have the planter situation figured out quite yet (still shopping around for a nice wood planter OR for something fun and used that might make a good container for LOTS of dirt), I decided to start germinating the seeds indoors. Besides, as I learned last year with the luffas, that part is fun!

So without further ado, here are the new kids in class...

I was kind of surprised by what the seeds looked like (I'm talking to YOU bibb lettuce). I was also surprised at how dumb I felt when I realized pea seeds look like... peas. Yep. They are peas.

I'll check in on them in a couple of days, see if there is any sproutin' action going on.

I love that the seed brand is called "Burpee"

Maybe a little too much.

Me too!! If I had planned better I would have ordered all my seeds from Local Harvest, but I was in a rush to get rolling.
